Department Chair and Professor of Labor and Employment Studies, John Logan, commented on a deal between labor unions and tech giants Uber and Lyft in POLITICO and CalMatters.
California lawmakers announced an agreement with Uber, Lyft and labor groups that would allow rideshare drivers in the state to organize and unionize, even as they remain classified as independent contractors. However, in exchange, California state will drastically reduce expensive insurance coverage mandates protested by the companies.
While the deal marks a huge shift in the gig economy landscape, Logan notes,” There are people within the labor community who say, ‘No, we should not settle for anything other than full employee status for gig workers.’”
Logan also contributed an opinion piece to The Hill, discussing President Trump’s administration efforts that have obliterated recent optimism in the labor movement. He highlighted that unions have become dependent on federal or state support for survival. Therefore, President Trump’s sweeping executive orders removing collective bargaining rights from federal workers reveal a deeper vulnerability to the unions’ existence. Logan warned, “If Trump succeeds politically, labor’s prospects are dim.”
