Professor John Logan's Report on Corporate Tactics Preventing Unionization Efforts was Published on Economic Policy Institute Website
A report written by John Logan, Department Chair and Professor of Labor and Employment Studies at the Lam Family College of Business at San Francisco State University, was published by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank that describes itself as "working for the last 30 years to counter rising inequality, low wages and weak benefits for working people, slower economic growth, unacceptable employment conditions, and a widening racial wage gap."
In his report, Logan examines what he describes as aggressive corporate tactics used to prevent unionization efforts. He states, “Workers at Starbucks, Amazon, and Trader Joe’s have encountered multibillion-dollar corporations who are prepared to do whatever is necessary, lawful or unlawful, to crush their organizing campaigns.” According to reports from workers of these companies, such tactics have discouraged employees from supporting unions under the threat of losing their jobs.
Logan concludes that due to weak laws and strong corporate opposition, union representation is likely to continue declining. He says, “Thus, it is almost inevitable that under the existing system of weak law and strong and unlawful corporate opposition, workers will fail to win unions or negotiate first contracts, and union density will continue to fall.”
