Professor John Logan shared his thoughts on several ongoing labor actions and policy developments in California.

San Francisco teachers are approaching their first strike since 1979 after nearly 6,000 educators voted overwhelmingly in favor of a work stoppage. The union, United Educators of San Francisco, is demanding higher pay, improved healthcare, more support for special education, and stable school programs.

Professor Logan also commented on a new California law giving the state more authority over labor rights in private workplaces, which is currently being challenged by the Trump administration. Logan said, “It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where the courts do not overturn these [state] laws,” warning that if overturned, unionized workers could face delays in securing contracts and future organizing efforts could be at risk.

Thousands of Kaiser Permanente health workers in California have begun an open-ended strike over staffing, wages, and patient care. Logan noted that federal policies affecting health coverage could influence Kaiser’s financial flexibility, saying, “Kaiser management wants to give itself as much flexibility and wants to avoid making concrete, enforceable commitments to the union in terms of staffing levels and working conditions that it might see are going to be a huge liability in that changing environment.”
