Professor John Logan Comments on the Ongoing Tension in Teacher's Union
John Logan, Professor and Chair of Labor and Employment Studies, shared his perspective on the ongoing tension between the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and its teacher's union as salary negotiations haven’t reached consensus in The San Francisco Standard.
After months of bargaining, SFUSD proposed a 2% salary increase as part of a new contract. The United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), which is seeking a 14% raise for paraeducators and a 9% raise for credentialed teachers over the next two years, rejected the offer immediately. UESF Vice President Frank Lara stated that a 2% raise is unacceptable.
Professor Logan noted that teachers' union strikes have become increasingly common in California and across the country as educators face rising costs and stagnant pay. “The two parties remain very far apart,” Logan highlighted, adding that “the district will have to move much closer to what the teachers are demanding if a strike is to be prevented.
Additionally, Logan gave an interview on The Rick Smith Show, where he discussed the broader implications of the rallies and their historic connection to labor’s long-standing fight for equality and power.
