Professor John Logan Commented on Different Union Topics Published by The ABC7 News and Other Major News Organizations
John Logan, Chair and Professor of Labor and Employment Studies, discussed the minimum wage increase for the healthcare workers on ABC7 News.
California has mandated a higher minimum wage, expected to impact 426,000 workers. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that will raise healthcare workers’ earnings to $25 per hour. Although the raise was anticipated on June 1st, issues with the state budget delayed the pay boost for several months. Finally, the minimum wage increase takes its effect this week for California.
Professor Logan mentioned that the minimum wage boost will help the healthcare industry retain and recruit workers, saying, “It's a way of providing something approaching a living wage for hundreds of thousands of workers that didn't have it before.”
Moreover, Logan commented on the outcomes of the minimum wage boost for the job market. He believes that the higher minimum wage won’t lead to job cuts, stating, “It's unlikely to result in significant job losses. But it may change job patterns in other ways.”
