Professor John Logan addressed Various Union-Related Issues in News Stories in Major News Outlets
Department Chair and Professor of Labor and Employment Studies, John Logan, commented on the recent Amazon strikes organized by labor unions in AXIOS, Reuters, and other major news outlets.
Amazon warehouse workers are protesting for higher wages and improved working conditions. Since the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) began integrating with Teamsters, their president, Sean O'Brien, has been working on building connections with Donald Trump. O’Brien suggested choosing Lori Chavez-DeRemer for the position of Labor Secretary. This move was interpreted as a pro-union decision from the Trump administration.
During his first term, Trump was known for his anti-union beliefs, raising questions about how his second-term administration might impact labor union activities. Professor Logan described the Amazon’s strike as a “kind of testing the limits of the right-wing populism of the new Republican Party.” He also mentioned that the strike before Christmas can be the last opportunity for Teamsters to make an impact before potential changes under the incoming Trump administration, saying, “Even a smaller strike could cause some inconvenience for Amazon.”
