Graduate Programs Application Checklist

Thank you for your interest in our graduate business programs. Here are the steps to take to apply to SF State's MBA, Executive MBA or MSA program.

Step One

Step Two

Submit the following to the Division of Graduate Studies:

Application Fee

Submit a check or money order for US$55.00 payable to San Francisco State University. Or, when applying online, you may submit the fee electronically.


The Division of Graduate Studies at San Francisco State University requires all applicants to submit official academic documents from all higher education institutions attended. An official academic document is a verification of your academic record issued directly from the university. Send one official sealed copy from ALL colleges, universities, and community colleges attended. Only original copies are accepted. Visit the University's Required Academic Documents for details. Please note: If you previously attended SF State, you do not need to submit an SF State transcript.

The University also accepts electronic transcripts sent directly from domestic universities. For details, see the e-transcript information on the Graduate Studies Office domestic applications page.

International transcripts must include original transcripts plus a certified English Translation. If official transcripts do not show the degree conferred, then a copy of the diploma with a certified English Translation is also required. International students should also review the information about specific Requirements by Country.

Step Three


The GMAT or the GRE test is required for admission by all applicants*. All test results must be sent to the university directly from the test center.

* In lieu of the GMAT or GRE, applicants to the EMBA program will be asked to come in for an interview with the admissions committee and take a writing test.


All graduate business applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English language proficiency. To demonstrate your English language ability, please request to have your official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic score report to San Francisco State University's Division of Graduate Studies. Scores are valid for two years from the test date. Check the English Requirement needed to apply. The English language testing requirement will be waived for applicants who have earned a U.S. Bachelor's or Master's degree.

Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose must be between 500–750 words and submitted as a separate document. On the top of the page, please include your name and SF State ID number (or month and day of birth if you do not have an SF State student ID number yet). Please save the document as a PDF and email to along with your résumé.

Your Statement of Purpose should include responses to these four questions:

  • How will an MBA or MS in Accountancy degree prepare you for your future goals?
  • Why are you applying to San Francisco State University?
  • Explain any past accomplishments which you feel are particularly important in relation to your future goals.
  • Please explain how each of the following two words apply to you: 1. Leadership 2. Team Player


Submit your most recent résumé. Full time work experience is recommended for admission to the program. Current incoming class average full time work experience is three years. Please include any internships or part-time work experience as well.

Two Letters of Recommendation

You may download the Letter of Recommendation Cover Form (pdf), sign and then submit to each recommender. Please ask your recommender to complete the form and attach to their recommendation letter. Letters can be from employers or professors. There is no specific format and no more than two letters are necessary. The recommenders may also write about your character and how you operate in a team environment. The letters of recommendation must be sent directly from your recommenders to our office via e-mail to or by mail; address is noted on the top portion of the cover form.

Financial Affidavit and Medical Insurance for International Students

Applicants who need a student visa, must present proof of financial resources and health insurance once they are admitted to our program. Please follow the instructions on the SF State I-20 page to submit proof of Financial resources and Medical insurance.
