Graduate Programs Application Checklist

Thank you for your interest in SF State's Graduate Business programs. The application process for the Graduate Business programs is as follows (EMBA applicants who are interested in 2018 admissions should contact our office at mba@sfsu.edu for more information):

Step One

Access the online application through the new Cal State Apply site and follow the instructions to apply for the Spring 2018 semester.

You may submit the application fee of US$55.00 online using a credit card.

Step Two

Submit the following documents online by uploading on the Cal State Apply site's "Program Materials" section:

Résumé

Submit your most recent résumé. Full time work experience is recommended for admission to the program. Current incoming class average full time work experience is three years. Please include any internships or part-time work experience as well.

Personal Statement

The Personal Statement must be between 500–750 words and should include responses to these four questions:

  • How will an MBA or MS in Accountancy degree prepare you for your future goals?
  • Why are you applying to San Francisco State University?
  • Explain any past accomplishments which you feel are particularly important in relation to your future goals.
  • Please explain how each of the following two words apply to you: 1. Leadership 2. Team Player

Unofficial Transcripts

Please upload all unofficial transcripts from all Universities and Colleges attended.

Step Three

Official Transcripts

The Division of Graduate Studies at San Francisco State University requires all applicants to submit official academic documents from all higher education institutions attended. An official academic document is a verification of your academic record issued directly from the university. Send one official sealed copy from ALL colleges, universities, and community colleges attended. Only original copies are accepted. Visit the University's Required Academic Documents for details. Please note: If you previously attended SF State, you do not need to submit an SF State transcript.

The University also accepts electronic transcripts sent directly from domestic universities. For details, see the e-transcript information on the Graduate Studies Office domestic applications page.

International transcripts must include original transcripts plus a certified English Translation. If official transcripts do not show the degree conferred, then a copy of the diploma with a certified English Translation is also required. International students should also review the information about specific Requirements by Country.

Step Four

GMAT or GRE Test

It is not necessary to upload your GMAT/GRE or TOEFL/IELTS Test Scores through Cal State Apply. See instructions below for test score submission:

The GMAT or the GRE test is required for admission*. All test results must be sent to the university directly from the test center.

To register for the GMAT, visit the GMAT website, or call 1(800) 717-GMAT.

To register for the GRE, visit http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register

* In lieu of the GMAT or GRE, applicants to the Executive MBA (EMBA) program will be asked to come in for an interview with the admissions committee and take a writing test.

TOEFL (or IELTS/PTE) Test

All graduate business applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English language proficiency. To demonstrate your English language ability, please request to have your official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic score report to San Francisco State University's Division of Graduate Studies. Scores are valid for two years from the test date. Check the English Requirement needed to apply. The English language testing requirement will be waived for applicants who have earned a U.S. Bachelor's or Master's degree.

Step Five

Two Letters of Recommendation- submit to our office via email

You may download the Letter of Recommendation Cover Form (pdf), sign and then submit to each recommender. Please ask your recommender to complete the form and attach to their recommendation letter. Letters can be from employers or professors. There is no specific format and no more than two letters are necessary. The recommenders may also write about your character and how you operate in a team environment. The letters of recommendation must be sent directly from your recommenders to our office via e-mail to mba@sfsu.edu.

Check Your Application Status

Once you have submitted your application, you may check your application status online. General information can be found on SF State’s Domestic student admissions and International student admissions page.

Financial Affidavit and Medical Insurance for International Students

Applicants who need a student visa, must present proof of financial resources and health insurance once they are admitted to our program. Please follow the instructions on the SF State I-20 page to submit proof of Financial resources and Medical insurance.
