Ethical finance, digital currencies and the work of Observatoire de Finance in a post pandemic world

- Professor Paul Dembinski, Observatoire de la Finance
Prof. Paul H. Dembinski is the initiator and Director of the Foundation of the Observatoire de la Finance. Professor Dembinski was born in Krakow, Poland. He speaks English, French, German, Polish and Spanish. He obtained a PhD in economics in 1982. He is a professor at the University of Fribourg and currently occupies the chair of International Strategy and Competition. In 1989, he co-founded Eco’Diagnostic, a fully independent, interdisciplinary economic research institute. He was awarded the title of Doctor honoris causa by the Warsaw School of Economics. In 1996, he became the founder and executive director of the Observatoire de la Finance in Geneva, which endeavours to promote ethical values in the financial sector. He is the author of a dozen books and around sixty scientific papers on the globalisation of companies, competition and ethics in finance.
The Obseravatoire de finance oversees a prize “Ethics and Trust in Finance for a Sustainable Future – formerly “Ethics in Finance – Robin Cosgrove Prize” – promotes new ways of thinking about the big challenges facing the global economy.

Dr. Virgile Perret
Dr. Virgile Perret is a lecturer in Political Science at the University of Lausanne. He is a project manager for the “Ethics and Trust in Finance” prize. Dr Perret holds a Ph.D in Political Science from the University of Lausanne, for which he was awarded the Prize of the Faculty in 2013. He’s specialized in the study of digital currencies and technological innovation from an interdisciplinary perspective. He collaborated with the European Commission, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the State of Vaud. He has contributed to the organization of the Prize since 2018.

Mark Brand is a pioneering chef and entrepreneur in the field of Social Impact and Community Development. Along with overseeing the 5 organizations under MB Inc, Brand leads his A Better Life Foundation in Canada, the United States, he is a Stanford fellow, Professor of Innovation and Design Thinking, and has served as executive chef for the American Refugee Committee and Pope Francis's Climate Challenge. Brand has recently been appointed to the United Nations Catalyst team focusing on food waste, poverty, and the impacts of current systemic structures on the most marginalized. At the root of everything he works on, his belief is that the solutions are all attainable with deep cooperation and the understanding there is no “Us and Them, only Us.”

Sophie Egan, MPH
Author & Director of Strategy, Food for Climate League
Sophie Egan, MPH, is an author, New York Times contributor, and the founder of Full Table Solutions, a consulting practice that’s a catalyst for food systems transformation. Her clients have included Stanford University, Mike Bloomberg 2020, The Culinary Institute of America, KitchenTown, and others. She is an internationally recognized thought leader whose work has galvanized broad movements to help all of us make healthier, more sustainable food choices. For over five years, Sophie served as the Director of Health and Sustainability Leadership/Editorial Director for the CIA’s Strategic Initiatives Group—leading widely adopted programs across the foodservice industry, such as Menus of Change; the CIA Healthy Kids Collaborative; and Menus of Change University Research Collaborative (MCURC).
She holds a master of public health, with a focus on health and social behavior, from University of California, Berkeley, where she was a Center for Health Leadership Fellow and studied closely under Michael Pollan. In 2016, she was named one of the UC Global Food Initiative’s 30 Under 30. In 2018, she earned a certificate from the Harvard Executive Education in Sustainability Leadership program. In addition to her leadership to improve the production side of the food system, she also works on the consumption side, using her writing to help shift cultural norms, debunk myths, and provide evidence-based guidance to eaters on how to eat in ways that align with their values. Her newest book is How to Be a Conscious Eater: Making Food Choices That Are Good for You, Others, and the Planet (Workman, 2020). It was named one of Bon Appétit’s “Favorite New Books for Climate-Friendly Cooking and Life.” Her first book, Devoured: How What We Eat Defines Who We Are (William Morrow, 2016), is a journey into the American food psyche.
