Classroom Activities in Support of Business Ethics Week
- Yikuan Lee (IBUS 590) will give a lecture on ethics and global business.
- Theresa Hammond (ACCT 305) will discuss the ethics involved in setting budgets, including the common practice of understating budgets in order to make favorable variances more achievable.
- Aaron Anderson (EMBA 888) will discuss ethics and strategic management with guest speaker Tim McMahon, Ph.D., who was a faculty member at the University of Houston during the Enron debacle.
- Paul Beckman (ISYS 464) will discuss ethical aspects of databases.
- Susan Cholette (BUS 786) will have her graduate students discuss the carbon footprint an international supply chain. In DS 412, she will discuss poor quality products and the lack of product testing.
- Jennifer Tosti-Kharas (MGMT 605) will have students role play as they decide whether or not to leave a harmful pharmaceutical on the market.
- Theresa Roeder (DS 412, DS 601) will discuss ethics applied to operations.
- Brenda Mak (ISYS 339/HTM 339, ISYS 363) will focus her students' attention on designing information systems to help with ethical problems such as employee theft, sexual harassment, and corporate fraud.
- Peter Melhus will discuss strategies for sustainable business in his BUS 857 class, and in BUS 784, discuss Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and sustainable development.
- Denise Kleinrichert will have BUS 682 seminar classes involved in two ways with ethical issues in business: 1) Oct. 26 & 28: student analysis presentations of corporate product crises at Nike, Merck, Odwalla, Johnson & Johnson, and BP; 2) Nov 2: global sustainable development practices for multinational companies. BUS 440 students will also have two days of activities: Oct. 26: each student selects one business to use in an iLearn Forum to discuss five environmental ethics mindsets and state how one of the "Shades of Green" strategic business goals might improve the company's market position; Nov. 2: discuss transparency in the finance & investment markets for constituents.
- Jason Harris-Boundy will discuss ethical leadership in his two sections of MGMT 648 while his graduate students in BUS 859 will discuss ethics and negotiation.
- Bruce Robertson will preview his lecture on ethics and marketing with student responses to two ethical dilemmas in his large section of MKTG 431.
- Toni Petkova will discuss with all three of her sections of BUS 890 two cases: 1. eBay preventing fraud online; 2. Monsanto's international expansion - ethical and legal issues
- Eric Lamm will discuss leading ethically in his BUS 788 section and discuss communicating honestly in teams in his MGMT 655 class.
- Sanjit Sengupta will play a 60 Minutes interview with Bill and Melinda Gates and talk about Philanthropy in his two sections of MKTG 860 and one section of MKTG 885.
- Amy Chang will have her students in two sections of ACCT 303 and one section of ACCT 301 attend one of the presentations by speakers during Business Ethics Week and write a summary of the presentation.
- Joel Nicholson will present for his large section of IBUS 330 a lecture on Justice Theories, John Rawls specifically, and discuss some cases of pharma in Africa.
- Minu Kumar will have his students in MKTG 637 discuss cases exploring the moral implications of offering bribes to close sales in countries where bribery is an accepted norm plus his students in two sections of MKTG 433 will analyze two videos with ethical content to identify issues relating to morality.
- Deniz Tudor will have both her sections of FIN 353 and her section of FIN 828 see the documentary "Maxed Out" and discuss topics such as predatory lending, front running, insider trading, spinning, etc.
- Lutfus Sayeed will discuss his recent article about Organizational Adjustments due to Green IT with the students in his ISYS 814 students.
- Jan Ahrens will discuss legal and ethical aspects of email, websites and social media in her section of MKTG 469.
- Michael Needham will show and discuss two videos his two sections of FIN 350: "The Warning" Frontline video on Brooksley Borne and Commodities Futures Trading Commission and "The Madoff Affair" Frontline video.
- Mitchell Marks has his students in MGMT 670 discussing ethical issues in collecting, analyzing and feeding back employee research data from methods including focus group, individual interviews, questionnaires, observations and assessment of archival data.
- Sam Gill will discuss the ethical issues related to information security in ISYS 575, what constitutes an ethical process design for BPM in ISYS 869, and the ethics of using open source web development systems and tools in ISYS 475.
- Lihua Wang will discuss sweatshop issues in international business in both of her sections of IBUS 690.
- Bonnie Homan will have a representative from the Disability Programs and Resource Center discuss The Accessible Workplace in her large section of ISYS 263.
- John O'Shaughnessy will discuss ethics and fraud in his section of ACCT 100 and two sections of ACCT 301.
- Murray Silverman will have Professor Lutfus Sayeed speak to his MGMT class about "green IT" plus there will be discussion of the role of accounting and finance in sustainable business.
- Norma Carr-Rufino will compare the treatment of Latino immigrants by the U.S. and the EU in her two sections of MGMT 640; her MGMT 650 students will discuss the cross-boundary skills involved in developing creative ideas into profitable innovations.
- Subodh Bhat will have his students in BUS 787 discuss Hasbro toy company's development of a TV channel for kids with considerable programming devoted to its products.
- Todd Feldman will discuss in his FIN 353 class the mortgage crisis and the unethical decisions made during the crisis leading up to the bailout.
- John Dopp will have his EMBA BUS 883 students discuss the fiscal and monetary policies necessary to clean up the deep recession caused by the ethical collapse of the financial and mortgage markets.
- Wilmer Pereira will have his students in IBUS 591 watch and discuss the documentary "Crude" about the $27 billion lawsuit pitting 30,000 rainforest dwellers in Ecuador against the U.S. oil giant Chevron.
- Gulnur Tumbat will discuss ethical issues regarding drugs, alcohol, gambling and smoking in her two sections of MKTG 434 and MKTG 633 class.
- Alan Jung will discuss in his FIN 820 class the case of Robert Citron, the treasurer of the $7.5 billion Orange County Investment Portfolio, who single-handedly bankrupted the portfolio in 1994.
- Mehmet Ergul will have his students in HTM 110 discussing ethics in lodging operations, restaurant & bars and the travel industry; his HTM 557 students will discuss ethical concerns in food and beverage management.

- Yuji Shibuya will have students in DS 710 view and discuss a video "Justice: What's the right thing to do?--Part 1" by a Harvard professor.
- Mahmood Hussain will have both his sections of MKTG 649 discuss a case on pricing, view and discuss two short videos, and discuss a book review in the Economist: “Companies are not charities.”
- Veronika Papyrina will discuss ethical issues related to the publication of caricatures of Muhammad by a Danish newspaper in both her sections of MKTG 432.
- Ken Danko will have his ACCT 895 students, in groups of 3, write a ten page paper related to an ethics case developed by the AICPA.
- Deanna Wang will have her MKTG 680 students present articles related to the impact of the oil spill accident on BP's brand image, and her two sections of MKTG 632 will discuss issues of privacy and email spam.
- Robert Saltzman will discuss with his students in DS 412 the ethical dilemma faced by faculty when students attempt to beg, bribe and swap their way into classes at the beginning of every semester.
- Jay Kang is having his ACCT 307 students write a paper on ethical conduct focused on the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the Foreign-Corrupt Practices Act.

- Udayabhanu will have his DS 856 student listen to a guest speaker talking about Ethical Issues in Project Management.
- Foo Nin Ho will discuss ethics in research in his section of MKTG 632 and privacy and ethics in his large section of MKTG 633 ( n=138).
- Sameer Verma will discuss software licensing and intellectual property related ethics in both his sections of BUS 782 and ISYS 565.
- Geoff Desa will have his students in two sections of BUS 690 report on clean technology and political barriers to entry plus the social responsibility of large consumer oriented companies (e.g. Coca-Cola, McDonalds) for selling products that are beneficial to public health. In his BUS 682 section students will debate Google’s activity in and recent disengagement from China.
- Tom Thomas will have the students in his three sections of BUS 682 discuss fiduciary duties to stockholders and other stakeholders, a case study on Enron and how governance mechanisms broke down, and anti-trust laws and their current application by the Department of Justice and FTC under the Obama Administration
- Don Danner will discuss acceptable use policy, protection of data - general security, ADA, software piracy, and digital rights management in his two sections of ISYS 363 and one section of ISYS 263.
- Roblyn Simeon will discuss corruption in emerging markets and attempts by various nations to reduce the practice in his two sections of IBUS 598.
- Tae Furuse will discuss ethical/moral issues and social responsibility in export/import management in his two sections of IBUS 430.
- Blaine Garfolo will discuss ethical issues in information systems in his two sections of ISYS 363 (total of 437 students).
- Mike Braswell will discuss the ethics of making certain accounting assumption that affect financial statements users' perception of how well the company is doing in his two sections of ACCT 100 (total of 142 students).
- Anthony Martinez will discuss corporate compliance and the treatment of ethical matters in the private sector in his three sections of BUS 690.
