VITA to offer free tax preparation on campus: 2021 tax filing season

The SFSU VITA program, sponsored by the accounting student organization members of Beta Alpha Psi- Beta Chi Chapter, offers FREE tax preparation services to individuals with low incomes who cannot afford the services of a paid professional tax preparer and to the elderly, those with limited English proficiency and individuals with disabilities who require assistance in preparing their tax returns.

If your 2020 household income is less than $66,000, you can get FREE tax help! IRS-certified tax preparers will help you get the refund you deserve!

Beta Alpha Psi-Beta Chi has partnered with Code for America and GetYourRefund.org to provide tax services to clients.

Dates of Operation:

February 9, 2021 through April 10, 2021

CLOSED March 23, 2021 through March 27, 2021 (Spring Break 2021)

Weekly Operational Hours:

Sunday & Monday: Closed

Tuesday - Friday: Noon – 6 p.m.

Saturday: 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

(IRS certified tax preparers will be contacting clients for intake interviews and quality review of taxes during these hours.)

Technology required:

Taxpayers will be required to have access to the internet along with an email account to file taxes with https://www.getyourrefund.org/sfsu. Taxpayers also have the option to receive text messages regarding the status of their returns*.

Taxpayers will be required to complete an intake questionnaire and upload their required tax documents. Documents can be uploaded directly from the taxpayer’s smartphone or device as pictures or PDFs.

The following documents will need to be photographed and uploaded during the questionnaire:

  • Taxpayers need to take a photos of their government issued photo ID (and passport for International Students), as well as a selfie with their government issued ID.
  • Taxpayers will also need to take photos of their social security card or ITIN, and all W-2 forms for all jobs held in 2020, 1099s, 1098s.
  • Photos of your 2019 tax return if you filed one as well.
  • During your intake interview you will be asked to provide Childcare provider information (if any)
  • Taxpayers will also be asked for their landlord’s name, address, and phone number (if any) for California the renter’s credit.

San Francisco State University VITA Program

The SFSU VITA program is a free tax preparation program sponsored by the IRS and the SFSU Beta Alpha Psi - Beta Chi Chapter, an international honor society for financial information majors. Our virtual site operations will open starting February 9, 2021, and continue through April 10th, 2021. Our hours of operation are from 12:00 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Our IRS certified tax preparers will be communicating with clients during these hours.
