Professor of Accounting Theresa Hammond discussed the accounting profession's diversity deficit in an INSIDE Public Accounting Special Report.
INSIDE Public Accounting publishes award-winning resources, analyses, and tools for accounting professionals focused on encouraging growth in the industry. This special report, The Diversity Deficit, explores the history of racism, diversity data, and the challenges involved in creating a racially balanced workforce in the accounting profession.
Hammond calls the lack of diversity in the field astonishing. "One of the reasons it's so troubling is that the economy is such an important contributor to inequity in our society," she says. "Access to personalized financial advice, from advisors who share some of their experiences, would increase the odds that minority-owned small businesses succeed... Black CPAs can play a huge part in serving their communities."
Hammond has extensively researched diversity issues in the accounting profession, and is an active member of the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Latino Professionals For America.
