Professor of Information Systems Lutfus Sayeed's 1997 article "Virtual teams versus face-to-face teams: An exploratory study of a web-based conference system" has received recognition for its popularity.
The paper, published in Decision Sciences Journal, was the first study to use an experiment to analyze web-based conference tools where students from three universities solved murder mysteries in remote groups. The goal of the study was to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of online tools in environments requiring virtual group problem solving.
Sayeed's article has received recognition for being among the 15 most downloaded in the journal's 50-year history and one of the 250 most cited articles in business and management education, according to a 2019 research paper published in the Academy of Management Learning. According to Google Scholar, the paper has received over 1,000 citations.
