Student teams from Building Mobile Business Applications (ISYS 573) course participated in two innovation competitions organized by the software giant SAP. Students proposed mobile application ideas for the Utility of Tomorrow contest (https://ideas.sap.com/utilityoftomorrow) and the Global Connected Car contest (https://ideas.sap.com/ConnectedCarContest2013).
Wayman Duong and his team proposed My Water Usage Management App and won the top prize in the Sustainable Resources category of the 2013 Utility of Tomorrow contest! Their team is invited to attend a week long workshop in August at the SAP Labs in Palo Alto.
In the workshop, they work with other winning teams and experts from SAP as well as sponsors from the utility industry to build prototypes of their winning ideas. PG&E SAP IT experts Larry Cantieri and John Oliver mentored ISYS 573 students to better understand the utility business and utility data during their class visits in the fall semester. Their class presentation inspired the students to develop innovative mobile apps for the Utility of Tomorrow contest.
Two other proposals developed by ISYS 573 students Brianto Hanito and Afsheen Agahi won the runners-up in the Global Connected Car Contest. The AutoX app idea proposed by Brianto provides smart management of car maintenance and car problem diagnosis. The Bringing Personalized Mobility to In-Vehicle Communication app proposed by Afsheen Agahi provides real time notifications of roadside attractions and points of interest that appeal to a driver’s specific tastes.
