Professor Lutfus Sayeed conducted a day long workshop on Big Data for Engineering and Computer Science professors from China

On July 30, Professor of Information Systems Lutfus Sayeed conducted a day-long workshop on Big Data for a group of 15 engineering and computer science professors from Southwest Jiao Tong University of China.

The topics covered included sources of big data, opportunities for businesses, data management challenges and analytical tools. Enterprise data warehouses, Hadoop, In-memory computing, Business Explorer, Lumira, WebI and SAS text analytics were specific technologies covered in the workshop.

In addition to discussion and lecture, the workshop consisted of hands on labs for the participants and demonstration of big data analytical tools. In the hands-on labs, the Chinese professors worked with a dataset with 37,000 observations while the software demonstrations involved analyzing data sets with more than 50,000 observations. The workshop was sponsored by the College of Extended Learning.
