San Francisco is seeing perhaps its biggest upswell in real estate development in more than a century – and SF State is ensuring that our business graduates are at the ready. As greater portions of the commercial real estate workforce enter into retirement, this resurgence in development presents tremendous career opportunities for the industry’s incoming generation.
To prepare graduates to capture these opportunities, the College of Business partnered with San Francisco’s Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) to develop a curriculum for students to earn a certificate in commercial real estate. Business students may earn the certificate by completing a four-course program within the Finance department: Real Estate Principals, Fundamentals of Real Estate, Commercial Real Estate Financial Management, and Commercial Leasing and Development.
Says Sandra Boyle, chairwoman of the BOMA Foundation’s board of directors, the curriculum “gives [students] a good basis because they're coming out of finance, which is what real estate is about today.” Given the success of the pilot program, BOMA hopes to expand the program to seven courses that enables students to graduate with a B.S. in Business Administration with a Specialty in Commercial Real Estate.
