A team of five economics students from San Francisco State University were selected among 44 other colleges and universities across the country to participate in this year’s Up to Us competition.

Bria Grant, Louay Mardini, Estevan Lopez, Bryan Bone and Emmanuel Lemire make up the five-member team for the competition set for early 2015. From January 26 to February 20, 2015, the students will organize awareness-building and engagement activities that invite the campus community into a discussion on America's growing long-term fiscal challenges and how they impact their future opportunities. At the end of the four-week campaign, each team is assessed on their effectiveness in raising awareness and inspiring action on campus and beyond.
Since October, Professor Venoo Kakar and Professor Michael Bar of the Economics Department have been working closely with the team as faculty advisers for the competition. Estevan Lopez, the UpToSFSU team leader, represented SF State at the Net Impact conference held early November in Minneapolis.
The winning team is awarded a $10,000 cash prize, in addition to being recognized by President Clinton at the CGI U 2015 meeting held in March. The competition is a partnership of three nonprofit organizations: Net Impact, The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) and The Peter G. Peterson Foundation.
Up to Us is a nationwide campus competition that empowers college students to educate their peers on our long-term national debt, how it could affect their economic opportunities, and what their generation can do to have a voice in raising awareness of our fiscal challenges.
