Position Description: 

Family Connections is a family learning community focused on education and growth for underserved children AND their parents and caregivers. We are a learning community in which children and parents attend programs together, learn together and grow together, from birth into Kindergarten and beyond. Our programs and services are offered at no cost so that all underserved families in our community, regardless of their circumstances, can participate. Our parent participation preschools provide enriching early learning experiences for birth-to-five year olds, resulting in children who arrive at kindergarten academically and socially ready to learn. Our parent leadership education and holistic family support systems help parents confidently and successfully embrace their role as their child’s first teacher, most influential role model and best advocate.

The Mental Health Clinician will focus on providing screening and assessment of the families we serve in our preschool programs, as well as providing short-term home and community-based therapeutic services and supports.

The Mental Health Clinician will be part of a collaborative community-based team of early childhood providers, including Family Educators, a Psychologist and two interns, and other key staff. This specific position serves the communities of Redwood City, East Palo Alto, and eastern Menlo Park.

A successful candidate for this position will have proven history working with young children and families, and will be able to communicate a sense of passion and commitment to early childhood mental health and family systems work. In addition, they will be comfortably working independently across settings, including home, community and classroom.

Position Responsibilities: 


Complete an assessment for each participating family (parents and children) that is inclusive of parenting skills and psychosocial well-being two times per year.

Create a treatment plan, based on the family’s assessed needs.

Provide short-term clinical services based on the treatment plan including, but not limited to, individual, family and/or group therapy, and assist the child/family in meeting case plan goals before terminating services.

Refer families for any needs that require a higher level of care, or are considered specialties, in order to meet treatment plan goals.

Meet with families, at minimum, once per week to assure needs and/or crisis are being managed.

Coordinate with Family Educators, Psychologist, and other key staff to support the unique needs of each family.

Coordinate treatment with other providers who are involved with each family.

Comply with documentation requirements.

Participate in program evaluation efforts.

Collaborate with team members to implement outreach efforts aimed at engaging families and building relationships with community partners.

Maintain client files and program documentation.

Attend group supervision, individual supervision, and regular program staff meetings.

Attend other meetings and trainings as required.

Provide informational training or presentations to community groups, as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 


Bilingual Spanish speaking required.

Excellent clinical assessment and therapeutic skills.

Knowledge of infant/child development and infant and early childhood mental health.

Experience working with families, and knowledge of Family Systems theories, models, and interventions.

Knowledge of DSM-V diagnosis and ability to accurately diagnose children and adults.

Knowledge of the dynamics and treatment of family violence.

Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Experience working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations.

Strong ability to work both independently and within a larger collaborative system of agencies, individuals, and disciplines.

Ability to work as a team member and to accomplish tasks supporting the agency’s mission.


Work in both an office setting and in the field.

Home visits required.

Driving throughout Southern San Mateo County required.

Preferred Qualifications: 


Minimum level of education is a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a related field (MSW or MS/MA minimum).

At minimum, must be registered with appropriate licensing board.

License as an MFT, LCSW or Psychologist strongly preferred.

If not licensed, at least one year working in a similar environment required.

The employee must have a valid CA driver’s license, and their own car with valid auto insurance.
