Speaker Event: Joel Makower, GreenBiz.com

Joel Makower, chairman and executive editor of GreenBiz.com, gave a talk about a sustainable and interconnected future for America at the College of Business, San Francisco State University Downtown Campus, November 15, 2016. His book, The New Grand Strategy: Restoring America’s Prosperity, Security and Sustainability in the 21st Century, “tells the story of a plan, born within the Pentagon, to recapture America’s greatness at home and abroad by elevating sustainability as our new strategic imperative. It aligns our enduring national interests of prosperity and security with a new framework that addresses pressing economic, social, and environmental issues at home, tapping into a trillion-dollar market demand for walkable communities, regenerative agriculture and resource productivity. It is an inspiring vision of what’s possible when Americans hold a collective view of the future and come together to bring it to reality.”

Summer High School Student Sustainability Camp

(June 2011 – present)

Our first camp had 12 students. Silicon Valley Bank began providing crucial funding, beginning in 2012, to host San Francisco United School District (SFUSD) public high school students to learn from CoB professors and industry experts about the intersections of environmental / social sustainability and business activities. The initial number of students attending grew to 40 in 2013. We had a 2014 and 2015 hiatus and resumed the camp again in summer 2016. Plans have been initiated with SFUSD staff to continue this program in summer 2017 on the main campus.

Ethics & Compliance Workshops

(2013 – present)

CESB has been at the forefront in the Bay Area in bringing ethics and compliance education curriculum and workshops to SF State students and the business community. Each Downtown Campus workshop has been developed in a collaborative effort between the CESB director and the business community to reach graduate and undergraduate students in shared educational best practices. Past workshops were collaborative with Kaiser Permanente, Wells Fargo, Salesforce.com, Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Deloitte & Touche, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Blue Shield, Holland America, Hilton, and City of San Francisco Department on the Status of Women.
