Linda and Nathaniel Oubré are supporters of accessible higher education and champions for diversity in California.

With the Linda and Nathaniel Oubré Leadership Scholarship Endowment, the Oubre family hopes to provide financial assistance to first-generation students in the College of Business who have demonstrated leadership on the San Francisco State University campus.

Linda and Nathaniel Oubré, both first generation college graduates and former student leaders, met while at the University of California Los Angeles, and were the first two African-Americans from UCLA to be granted admission to the Harvard Business School as college seniors.

Linda S. Oubré advanced her career in business and academia for nearly three decades prior to her appointment as dean of the College of Business at SF State in July 2012. She was the president and founder of BriteSmile Inc., general manager of new business development for the Los Angeles Times, and director of operations for Walt Disney Consumer Products. She also taught in the business programs at the Wharton School, UC Davis Graduate School of Management, and San Diego State University.

Nathaniel L. Oubré, Jr. has risen to the senior leadership ranks in his 30-year business career. Currently, he is the senior vice president and area manager-CEO for Kaiser Permanente’s East Bay Service Area. He previously worked in operations and strategy consulting for Deloitte and Bain & Company.

Eligibility Requirements


  • new or continuing undergraduate student
  • first-generation college student majoring in business
  • demonstrated on-campus leadership experience
  • California resident

Financial Need

Eligibility requirements include that students show financial need. Students must apply for financial aid using the FAFSA form to determine financial need. 


Students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) for all academic work completed. Student must be enrolled full-time, a minimum of 12 units, per semester.

How to apply

Students must apply through the new Academic Works Scholarship System at:

  • completed Linda and Nathaniel Oubre Leadership Scholarship application including essays.
  • current transcript (unofficial is acceptable). For new students: transcript from your last school attended. For continuing students, current SF State transcript
  • one letter of recommendation

 Friday, March 21, 2014


Applicants are notified of committee’s decision via e-mail.

Scholarship recipient(s) will also receive an award letter sent to the address indicated on the application.
