Information for students admitted to the Fall 2017 MBA and MSA programs

There are a few to-dos to take care of before you start the Fall semester on Wednesday, August 23, 2017:

  1. Accept your admission offer
  2. Submit proof of immunization prior to class registration
  3. Submit a Business course waiver request
  4. Submit a Financial Aid application
  5. Plan course selection for your first semester
  6. Register for classes
  7. Register for BUS 714 (required only for students with Conditional Admission)
  8. RSVP to attend the required orientation on Friday, August 18

1. Accept your admissions offer

All admitted students should indicate their decision on accepting the admissions offer via the SF State Gateway website within two weeks from their admissions date. A response is required in order to start the matriculation process of registering for classes and to sign up for an SF State email account.

2. Submit proof of immunization prior to class registration

You must show proof that you have received all required immunizations before you can register for classes during the June-July class registration period. Please refer to the SF State Immunization Requirements webpage and complete the form to submit your proof of immunization to the Registrar’s Office as soon as possible. You or your physician may mail or fax the immunization form to the address provided on the website or email it to records@sfsu.edu. Once your immunization records have been received and processed, the Immunization Hold will be lifted from your record and you may then register for classes during the registration period.

3. Submit a business course waiver request

Students who have completed Business courses in the past seven (7) years with at least a B- or better grade, may be eligible to waive the equivalent SF State 700-level course. Please mail or drop off the required documents to our office as soon as you have all the required documents. You may submit the waiver any time before the start of your first semester, however we encourage you to submit the waiver form as soon as possible. You will receive an email from our office with the decision once your waiver request has been reviewed.

Students must complete the following steps:

Step 1) Print and fill out the course waiver request form (pdf). A listing of our 700-level business course descriptions is found in the bulletin at http://bulletin.sfsu.edu/courses/bus/.

Step 2) Submit a course syllabus or detailed outline for each of the business courses you have taken in the past seven years at a college or university. International Students will need to submit fully translated copies of syllabi or course outlines.

Step 3) Submit a photocopy of the transcripts from the university where you completed the business courses and circle the courses to be reviewed.

Step 4) Mail the waiver form, the course(s) syllabus and copy of transcripts to:

Please note: If you have received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from an AACSB-accredited school in the past seven years with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of coursework, you do not need to submit the form or any documents. You will automatically receive an approved waiver letter from our office via email.

4. Submit a Financial Aid application (U.S. citizens and residents)

MBA and MSA students who are considering Financial Aid, may refer to the SF State Financial Aid webpage.

Please note the FAFSA deadline for the State of California is March 1. If you miss the deadline, you may still file the FAFSA application but award decision may be delayed. If you have any question about Financial Aid, please contact our Financial Aid office directly on the Holloway Campus at 415.338.7000 and ask for Mr. Jimmie Wilder or email him at jwilder@sfsu.edu.

5. Plan course selection for your first semester

To plan your courses for the Fall semester:

6. Register for classes

Early course registration period will begin in June 2017 and other registration periods will continue in July and August 2017. New incoming students may register any time during their designated registration period. Please refer to your student information page on the SF State Gateway to view your assigned start date to register for courses. Tuition payment is required immediately after students register for classes.

  • Early course registration period has closed. (June 8 - July 21: register for 9 units during this time, plus up to 4 units wait listed. Tuition payment deadline during this early registration period is July 24 at 4 p.m.)
  • Priority registration period is July 31 - August 11, with registration for up to 15 units. Tuition payment deadline during the priority registration time is July 24, at 4 p.m.

7. Students admitted as Conditional are required to take the BUS 714 Business Writing course

New students who are admitted conditionally (based on the writing score on the GMAT or GRE) are required to take the BUS 714 Elements of Business Writing class in their first semester at SF State. If you are "Conditionally" admitted and required to take this course, it will be stated on your admission letter as well as on your SF State Gateway student center. This 3-unit course is offered through SF State's College of Extended Learning.

Class Schedule & Registration for BUS 714

The BUS 714 course is listed on the online class schedule and is open for registration beginning August 1, because it is offered through the College of Extended Learning. You may register for the course during the July 31- August 11 window, and pay the BUS 714 tuition payment of $1,185 within five calendar days. Students should register for the course with the Credit/No Credit grade option.

When searching for the course on the class schedule, select Fall 2017 for Term, select Business under Subject, and then type 714 for course number and you should see the course listed. There will be two sections of this course offered in the Fall. One section on Tuesdays from 2 to 4:45 p.m. and another section on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Please keep in mind that you need to complete this course in your first semester, so you will need to plan your other courses around the BUS 714 class schedule.

Note regarding Financial Aid and the BUS 714 class: If you have been approved for Financial Aid, please note that the BUS 714 class may not qualify as units towards financial aid, since it is offered through the College of Extended Learning. Please contact the Financial Aid office for more details.

8. RSVP to attend the required orientation in August

A required all-day orientation for new MBA and MSA students is schedule on Friday, August 18, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the SF State Downtown Campus. Register for orientation and view the agenda.

International students are also required to attend the mandatory orientation days organized by the Office of International Programs between August 14 and 16 on the SF State Main Campus. More info on the OIP website.

There is an optional Graduate orientation on Monday, August 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by SF State's Main Campus for all students starting a graduate program in the fall. This orientation is not mandatory.
