Assistant Professor Peter Melhus, and Associate Professor Bruce Paton have published an article titled, “The Paradox of Multi-Stakeholder Collaborations: Insights from Sustainable Silicon Valley’s Regional CO2 Emissions Reduction Program”, in the Journal of Environmental Sustainability.

The article illustrates an apparent paradox—that collaboration among businesses, governments and non-profit organizations may be extremely effective in enlisting participation of diverse participants, heightening awareness of critical problems, and catalyzing actions in the absence of clear public policy requirements, but not effective at achieving specific targets.

Sustainable Silicon ValleyThe study is based on the authors’ decade-long leadership role in Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV), a coalition of more than 200 business, government, non-profit and educational organizations. The article demonstrates the substantial effect that SSV’s voluntary CO2 reduction program had on local and state policies, despite the program’s failure to meet its stated goals.
