Description

This paper is proposes that modern civilization's perception of the future is abstract and therefore disassociated from the wisdom of the body. Modern consumer society is conditioned to "live for the future," but it is an abstract future which is not grounded in embodied reality. Such an abstract way of thinking and relating to the future is a major underlying cause of social acceleration, stress, and insatiable desires for consumption. Further, this paper shows how a belief in an abstract future is contingent on a deeply rooted dissociation between mind and body. This schism also permeates the corporeal body
