Description

This paper uses a computational equilibrium model of international trade in apparel to investigate the consequences of policies intended to reduce child labor in selected Asian countries. Tariffs applied to reduce child labor may be welfare worsening for working children. The effects of domestic taxes are mixed, depending on whether the children or the adults receive transfers from the government. Transfer payments from the developed countries in the form of subsidies to education of children in poor countries may not only reduce child labor but also improve their welfare. Some sensitivity analyses show that the qualitative conclusions of the base case are robust with respect to changes in the underlying parameters.
