Description

This study develops a model of immigration to the U.S. and Canada that includes a unique set of variables relating to various social programs in source countries. Pooled cross section (59 countries) and time series (20 years) data are used, and Hausman-Taylor Instrumental Variable estimates are obtained. The empirical results indicate that in addition to other factors, source-country social programs are important determinants of North American immigration. Unemployment insurance programs and health insurance systems particularly stand out.
