Carol Amaya

Lecturer, Hospitality and Tourism Management

Carol Amaya, SPHR, is the president of Hospitality Educators, Inc. (HEI), an Oakland, California-based business integration firm specializing in people management practices. Working side-by-side with owners and operators, HEI strives to create a high-performance team. This is accomplished by clarifying, aligning and implementing human resource and business strategies that will give an organization a competitive advantage by decreasing turnover and increasing customer and employee satisfaction.

In addition to developing, coordinating, and directing the educational programs for the state-wide member base, Ms. Amaya was the executive director of the Educational Foundation with responsibility for promotion, scholarship and grant applications, as well as developing and implementing fund-raising activities. Through her affiliation with the association, Ms. Amaya also coordinated and taught restaurant management courses offered through UCLA Extension's Business & Management Division.

Also through her affiliation with the Restaurant Association, Ms. Amaya is credited for her assistance in the production of two, one-hour public television segments on careers in the hospitality industry produced by the Los Angeles County Unified School District and an alcohol awareness program produced by Fox Television titled "Sign of the Times."

Since 1995, Ms. Amaya has been an instructor within the Hospitality and Tourism Management department at San Francisco State University and an active member of its advisory board.  She is also a faculty advisor for the Hospitality Management Society, a student-run organization.

In addition she taught a variety of hotel and restaurant operation courses while working with the management department of San Francisco as an adjunct faculty member of the American Hotel & Motel Association.

Ms. Amaya has over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, having worked in numerous capacities. Her experience is at both the corporate and unit levels, with large and small independent operators.

Prior to entering the hospitality arena, Ms. Amaya worked in corporate finance on Wall Street and in corporate and consumer banking after relocating to San Francisco.
