Development Officer, Mercy Corps

"I've applied a number of useful skills acquired through SF State's EMBA program, such as cross-cultural communication and data management. My work here is particularly reminiscent of the social enterprise case studies from our sustainability course."

Every so often, you come across an exceptional business school alum who has decided not to chase the almighty buck and put the skills learned to good use in alternative ways, for non-profit agencies. Mary Tam is one of those people.

Before entering the SF State EMBA Program, Mary was the events manager for Edgewood Center for Children and Families. In mid-program, she joined Mercy Corps, an international humanitarian and development organization. Mercy Corps exists to help people suffering from severe poverty, civil conflict and natural disasters. While enrolled in the Executive MBA Program, she developed a marketing proposal for Mercy Corps in the Bay Area as her capstone project.

After graduating, Mary took a leave of absence from her fundraising position to do a summer internship in Kyrgyzstan at Kompanion, a Kyrgyz microfinance institution (MFI) founded by Mercy Corps. Mary has returned to San Francisco and resumed her role as Development Officer, raising funds and visibility for Mercy Corps.
