Tourism Cares 2009 Academic Scholarship Offerings

Academic scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to students at an accredited college or university primarily in the United States and Canada. Various states and provinces, private entities, and corporations sponsor these awards. Tourism Cares offers two types of scholarships, Named Scholarships and State Scholarships.
Undergraduate students must be enrolled in a tourism-specific program or area of focus, or be enrolled in a hospitality program with a focus on travel and tourism. Each undergraduate scholarship award can be used to cover expenses for tuition, books, and educational fees only.
Arnold Rigby Scholarship
Award: $1,000
History: This scholarship was established in memory of Arnold Rigby, who pioneered the escorted tour business with his company Arnold Tours in Boston, MA.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada who are currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited graduate school in either the United States or Canada. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism.
Canada Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: This scholarship has been made possible by contributions from the tourism offices of all of the Canadian provinces.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of Canada who are attending an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in either Canada or the United States. Applicants must be entering their final year of undergraduate study, OR currently be enrolled in or accepted into a graduate program. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
Dave Herren Memorial Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: This scholarship was established in memory of Dave Herren, a true pioneer for United Airlines in developing packaged travel to Hawai’i. He later used his talents and innovation to help grow the Mark Travel Corporation. Dave served for many years on the board of trustees and was also Chairman of the National Tourism Foundation, the National Tour Association’s charitable organization (Tourism Cares predecessor). He was dedicated to supporting educational programs for young people interested in travel industry careers.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States who are attending an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in the United States. Applicants must be full-time students entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study, OR currently be enrolled in or accepted into a graduate program. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
Dr. Tom Anderson Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: In 1991, this scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Tom Anderson by his industry colleagues. He served as a member of the National Tour Association’s Board of Directors and as a volunteer leader for the association and the industry.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada who are currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited graduate school in either the United States or Canada. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism.
Eric Friedheim Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: Established in 1986, this scholarship was made possible by the Eric Friedheim Foundation in memory of Eric Friedheim. Eric Friedheim was owner, publisher, and editor-in-chief of Travel Agent magazine and a past chairman of the National Tour Association.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States who are currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited graduate school in the United States. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism.
La Macchia Family Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: This scholarship was endowed in honor of William E. La Macchia, the founder of Mark Travel Corporation, at his induction into the Tourism Hall of Fame in 2004.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to students who are entering their junior or senior year at an accredited undergraduate school in the state of Wisconsin. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
National Tour Association State Scholarships Award: 13 scholarships at $1,000 each
History: These scholarships have been made possible by contributions from 41 U. S. state tourism offices.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada who are attending an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study, OR currently be enrolled in or accepted into a graduate program. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
New Horizons – Kathy LeTarte Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: Kathy LeTarte, former president and owner of New Horizons Tour and Travel, established this fund in 2000 to support educational opportunities for students of tourism. The company, founded in 1986, is specialized in student markets. She has volunteered in various capacities for the National Tour Association, including having served as past president.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to permanent residents of Michigan who are entering their junior or senior year at an accredited undergraduate school in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
New York Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: This scholarship has been made possible through contributions organized by Destinations of New York State.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to permanent residents of New York who are entering their second year at an accredited two-year school in New York OR their junior or senior year of an accredited four-year school in New York. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
Pat & Jim Host Scholarship Award: $1,000
Criteria: This scholarship is available to permanent residents of Kentucky who are currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in the state of Kentucky. Applicants must be full-time students pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
Québec Scholarship Award: $1,500
History: This scholarship was made possible by Tourisme Québec, the Société des Casinos du Québec, and the Fondation Louise Dessureault.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to permanent residents of Québec who are attending an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in either Canada or the United States. Applicants must be entering their final year of undergraduate study (at a three-year or four-year university) OR be enrolled in or accepted into graduate school. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
René Campbell Memorial Scholarship Award: $1,000
History: René Campbell, Ph.D. worked at the director level for various tourism organizations and was Executive Director of the Chapel Hill, North Carolina Convention and Visitors Bureau prior to her death in 2005. She was a committed long-term volunteer with the National Tour Association (NTA), having served on the Board of Directors and various committees. She also worked diligently with the National Tourism Foundation where she served as a past Chairman as well as helping with the Experience the Industry Student Program at the NTA annual convention.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to permanent residents of North Carolina who are attending an accredited undergraduate school in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be entering their junior or senior year and pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality (with a focus on travel and tourism).
Sustainable Tourism Scholarship Award: $1,000
Criteria: This scholarship is available to students pursuing a degree in travel and tourism or hospitality at an accredited graduate school. Applicants can be from any country and be enrolled in a graduate school anywhere in the world.
Travel Leaders Scholarship Award: 3 scholarships at $1,000 each
Criteria: This scholarship is available to students who are currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited graduate school in either the United States or Canada. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a clear focus on and commitment to the tourism-subject area.
Yellow Ribbon Scholarship
Award: $5,000
History: This scholarship was established by entertainer Tony Orlando in 1993.
Criteria: This scholarship is available to students who have a physical or sensory disability. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada who are attending an accredited undergraduate or graduate school in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in travel and tourism. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
