The College of Business has launched the Center for Ethical and Sustainable Business, a clearinghouse for sustainable and ethical business education that will incorporate research and expertise from disciplines across the college.

Housed at the Downtown Campus near San Francisco's financial center, the Center for Ethical and Sustainable Business builds on the College of Business' long dedication to teaching environmentally sound and sustainable business practices, while offering real-world experience and opportunities for interaction with Bay Area businesses.

"This is going to be a college-wide resource," Associate Professor of Management Tom Thomas said. "Our mission and our priorities touch on all areas of faculty expertise. This will provide a structure for a more formal approach to addressing issues of economic development, ethical business and environmental business in the Bay Area."

Thomas compared the center to a consulting firm that can draw on the expertise of faculty, while providing research opportunities and real-world opportunities for students in the San Francisco business community.

The center will also:

  • Build long-term partnerships with local organizations and businesses interested in ethical and sustainable business practices
  • Help facilitate career opportunities for SF State MBA students
  • Enrich the academic experience through integration of real-life, hands-on engagements with Bay Area businesses
  • Conduct and publish applied research on sustainable business
  • Organize events focused on ethical and sustainable business practices

"This is all about engagement with the business community," Management Chair Murray Silverman said. "This will allow faculty to conduct applied research in the Bay Area and provide a two-way channel between the University and business community."

The College of Business has long been a leader in sustainable business education. The college ranked 29th in the world for sustainable business education in the most recent "Beyond Grey Pinstripes" rankings by the Aspen Institute and has emphasized ethics and social and environmental issues in its curriculum for more than 25 years.
