Moss Adams San Francisco donates laptops to the award-winning San Francisco State University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and Beta Alpha Psi!

VITA Awarded Laptops

This summer Moss Adams San Francisco continued its steadfast support of San Francisco State University (SFSU) by donating 7 laptops, complete with docking stations and wireless cards, to the national award-winning Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and supporting organization Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Chi Chapter. The donation more than doubles the SFSU VITA capacity and ensures that the students participating in the program will continue to gain real world tax experience while serving the community for years to come.

On July 28, 2006, Bob Ryker, Managing Partner of Moss Adams San Francisco, hosted a short ceremony to celebrate the donation and the success of the SFSU VITA program. The Dean of the SFSU College of Business, Nancy Hayes, Drs. Jiunn Huang and Joanne Duke of San Francisco State’s accounting faculty and several students attended. Hutson Tapp, President of the Beta Chi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi and a recent intern at the San Francisco office, presented Bob with a certificate of appreciation for the donation on behalf of the Dean, faculty, and Beta Alpha Psi. Another new addition to the Moss Adams staff, Rebecca Dura (past President of the Beta Chi chapter) was also recognized for her contribution to the success of the prior year’s program.

Bob Ryker Awarded CertificateMoss Adams San Francisco has been a proud supporter of the SFSU faculty, students, and local community for many years and plans on continuing their support to SFSU for years to come.

This past tax season 120 student volunteers helped more than 600 San Francisco families and individuals recover almost $460,000 in Federal and California tax refunds which was a 340% increase from the prior year! In setting this high mark, San Francisco State University surpassed every other VITA program in the nation! Because of this historic achievement the IRS’s Office of Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication, Wage and Investment Division recently recognized SFSU’s VITA program for their outstanding contributions to the community by awarding them with two National Leadership Awards and a Certificate of Recognition.

The National Leadership Awards given were:

  • Greatest number of volunteer hours
  • Greatest number of volunteer hours per Beta Alpha Psi Member/Pledge

The awards were presented at the Annual Beta Alpha Psi meeting held in Washington DC in August 2006. The IRS has 8 categories for its annual national awards. For SFSU to win 2 of the 8 awards is a tribute to the hard work and passion that the students and faculty put into the program.

The VITA office on campus will open Mon., Feb. 5, 2007 and training will kick off on Friday, Jan. 12. For more information about the program please go to Volunteers are always needed and welcome!
