A paper by Economics Professor Sudip Chattopadhyay titled "Do Smart Growth Strategies Have a Role in Curbing Vehicle Miles Traveled? A Further Assessment Using Household Level Survey Data" has recently been accepted for publication at Berkeley Electronic Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy.
In this paper, Professor Chattopadhyay and his masters' student Emily Taylor show that California’s “Smart Growth” initiatives, if implemented as originally proposed through the Land Use Planning statute SB 375 and The California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32), can result in significant reduction in the demand for private transportation in California and consequently reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission to tackle climate change.
