News + Events : In Memoriam: Decision Sciences Professor Paul Rech
Emeritus Professor of Decision Sciences Paul Rech passed on to his eternal home July 21, 2012. Paul enjoyed a long career in the College of Business at San Francisco State University from 1975 to 2003 as a professor of operations research and business forecasting.
Paul was born June 23, 1931, in Alsace, France. He graduated from the University of Strasbourg, France in Physics and held an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations research from U.C. Berkeley. He taught courses and graduate seminars in operations analysis, management science and business forecasting. Teaching was his passion and most satisfying work. His goal in teaching was “to create an environment where learning could take place.”
His work in business as well as teaching involved him in both theoretical and applied research covering most fields of management science and operations research and a variety of application areas for over 25 years.
In addition to his time at SF State, Paul spent time at Systems Applications Inc., Stanford Research Institute, and Shell Oil’s Corporate Planning Department. He was also a member of the Operations Research Society of America and The Institute of Management Science.
He will be sorely missed by students, colleagues and friends who held him in high esteem, and by his family who loved him.
A memorial is planned for August 25 at 1 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, 3355 19th Avenue (at Winston). Parking is on 19th Avenue and in the Stonestown lot.
