Marc Joseph Wirtz, a Business Administration senior pursuing the Management concentration, has been awarded the prestigious Panetta Congressional Internship Program for Fall 2009.
The Congressional Internship Program begins with an intensive two-week course in Monterey Bay, California, with Leon Panetta (current CIA director, former congressman, and former White House chief of staff) and other seasoned veterans who explain how the legislative process works. Each intern is then assigned to the Capitol Hill office of a member of the California congressional delegation (both Democratic and Republican members sponsor interns) in Washington DC for two and a half months. The internship covers all program costs including air travel, and food and lodging in Monterey and in Washington, D.C. and a stipend.
Originally from Upland California, Marc has an extensive background of academic, professional and community service achievements. Last year, he was awarded the Willie Brown Jr. Leadership Internship at San Francisco City Hall where he worked with the San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority.
After returning from the Panetta Internship he plans to get a master’s degree in nursing at SF State. He believes that with a achelor’s degree in business, a master’s degree in nursing and first-hand political experience in both the local and national arenas, he will be well prepared to work towards his goal of reforming the nation’s health care policy. He would like to get involved with politics at a city and state level, and possibly at a national level.
