Responsibilities:

The Merola Opera Program is seeking a talented and dedicated events and marketing intern for the winter/spring semester, beginning in early January 2014. A monthly stipend is provided.

This internship is suited for those interested in non-profit and/or arts management. You will have opportunities to create, develop, and learn from one of the most respected performing arts institutions in the world.

For 56 years, the Merola Opera Program has been regarded as the world's foremost opera training program for aspiring singers, coaches and stage directors from all over the world.

As the cornerstone of San Francisco Opera's training and performance programs for promising young artists, Merola has served as a proving ground for hundreds of artists, including Ruth Ann Swenson, Deborah Voigt, Anna Netrebko, Patricia Racette, Sylvia McNair, Thomas Hampson, Carol Vaness, Joyce DiDonato, Susan Graham and Dolora Zajick among many others.

Under the direction of the Marketing Director and the Marketing, PR and Events Associate, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the event and marketing efforts of the Merola Opera Program winter/spring 2014 season (January - May). The Merola intern will be involved in events planning, most importantly the Merola Spring Benefit Gala.

Gala work will include tracking details, working with vendors and proactively following up with silent auction items and ticket purchases. Being detail oriented is a must. In addition, the intern will be involved with off-season events, assisting with press releases, media alerts, social media updates, developing photographic archives and market research.

In addition, the intern will receive training in and become experienced with Raiser's Edge, a widely used database management program for performing arts organizations and Auction Tracker, the lead software of event management fundraising. This is a learning opportunity, which includes several educational modules with the staff focusing on various aspects of marketing and public relations, such as social media, creating press releases, web design programs, event creation, and development for non-profits.

Skills & Abilities:

Intern should be available 10 -15 hours per week to work in our Hayes Valley office.

Applicants should have excellent computer skills (Adobe Creative Suite a plus), online research skills (or enthusiasm to learn) and be web-savvy (CMS platform skills are a plus).

Interest in event planning, hospitality, education and/or project management are a plus.

In addition, the intern should have strong writing and verbal skills. The ability to work independently is desired as well as an enthusiasm for the performing arts. Housing and transportation not provided.
