Program Summary:

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-based, local economic development organization which has engaged individuals and small businesses in community-building strategies for over 40 years.

Our mission is to achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low and moderate income Latino families through asset development. Four years ago, MEDA launched Plaza Adelante, a one-stop financial and asset development center.

This year, MEDA will be kicking off our fourth year of offering free tax preparation services to low-income families as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Last year, not only did MEDA staff and volunteers prepare nearly 3,800 tax returns and bring a total of $5.2 million dollars in tax refunds back into the community, but we also helped to connect our tax assistance clients to other services such as affordable financial products, microenterprise development, public benefits and financial aid for college students.

Provide free tax return preparation to persons eligible for service (i.e., those earning less than $50,000 per year, persons with disabilities, non-English speaking and the elderly.)

As a Tax Preparation volunteer you will get the opportunity to learn how to do taxes and learn about asset development services, while helping thousands of low-income families keep millions of dollars in tax returns. Without volunteers providing this tax preparation service, many low income families would not have their taxes done due to the up-front expense.

This is a challenging job, but a very rewarding one.

  • You will receive basic tax training, learn tax law and utilize cutting edge tax software. Tax preparation is a basic skill that you’ll be able to use to help yourself, friends, and family for years to come. We will train you how to file personal income taxes for free, and will provide the basic foundation for more complex returns you might have to prepare in the future.
  • Become an IRS certified tax preparer. All volunteers will pass the IRS Basic Certification exam before assisting any clients and will receive a certificate from the IRS upon completion of the VITA program.
  • Strong resume builder of unique community service in business. Whether you are looking to go into accounting, consulting, business, or even law school or medical school, VITA will look great on your resume. This is a unique community service experience that will help you stand out from everyone else. You are making a tangible impact on peoples’ lives and gaining business experience.
  • Client experience in a business setting. If you’re looking at a career in business, communication skills is one of the key skills companies are looking for. Being able to say you’ve actually gained and practiced these skills can set you apart from other job applicants.
  • Help make a substantial difference in the lives of clients. Be engaged in the Mission community and give back to its residents
