First Steps

The information outlined on this page is to help you prepare for your first semester.

Accept Admission Offer

All newly admitted students must respond online and let us know if they accept our admission offer (AAO). If you have not done so already, please access the application on the SF State Gateway website today to indicate whether you plan on attending San Francisco State University in the Fall semester. Your response is required in order to register for classes and to sign up for an SF State email account as well.

Submit Proof of Immunization

You must show proof that you have received all required immunizations before you will be allowed to register for classes. Submit proof of immunization or Immunization Form http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/forms/regforms/mmr.pdf directly to Registrar’s Office (records@sfsu.edu).

Foundation Course Waiving and Course Planning

Students who are eligible to waive Foundation courses will receive a letter from our office via email so they can plan their class registration accordingly. For course planning, students can refer to our website to find the MBA course flowchart, the MSA course flowchart for students with a bachelor's degree in Accounting or the MSA  flowchart for students with no previous Accounting degree.

Academic Advising for Newly Admitted MBA and MSA Students

If you would like to discuss the curriculum and course requirements with an adviser, please email us at mba@sfsu.edu and we will connect you with the appropriate adviser.

Fall 2014 Class Registration for New Incoming Students

Registration for new students: June 2 through August 17. New students may register for up to 9 units until July 23 and waitlist for up to 4 units. 

Payment due date: Courses added on or before July 8 will be retained if fees are paid by July 8 at 4pm. Courses added after July 8 will be retained if fees are paid by August 18 at 4pm.

Note: Beginning July 24, all students including current students can register for classes, so we suggest registering and paying for classes before this date.

Students can register for classes using their account on the SF State Gateway website.
The list of classes offered in the Fall semester is available on the online class schedule.

To find the Graduate Business Classes, follow the instructions below:

  • Click on Class schedule for Fall 2014
  • Under the Class Search section, choose "Regular Academic Session" from the drop down
  • Then choose the appropriate Course Subject (emphasis) such as Accounting, Business, Management, etc.
  • For a general search of all courses under an emphasis, do not select any Course Number
  • Choose "Postbaccalaureate" for Course Career
  • Under the Additional Search Criteria, you may select any specific days or times you would like to find classes

Financial Aid Information (U.S. citizens and residents)

If you are considering Financial Aid but have not applied yet, you may still do so by following the instructions on the Financial Aid site even after the regular deadline. If you have any questions, please contact our Financial Aid office directly on the Main Campus at (415) 338-7000 and ask for Jimmie Wilder or email him at jwilder@sfsu.edu.

Graduate Business Programs New Student Orientation

Saturday, August 23, 2014, SF State Downtown Campus, 6th floor. 

At this required all day event, learn more about program policies and requirements, participate in various mandatory sessions, network with fellow students and meet faculty and staff.

In addition, the University’s Division of Graduate Studies holds a New Graduate Student Orientation presentation for graduate students for all majors on August 15 and 16. Attendance at the Main Campus orientation is optional and not required for MBA and MSA students.

International Students

If you are an international student who is on an F1 visa, you are required to attend a Welcome and Advising session for graduate business students on Thurs., Aug. 23 at the SF State Downtown Campus.

International students also receive information from the Office of International Programs (OIP) regarding a required week-long orientation taking place from August 18-22 on the Main Campus. We highly recommend attending all days.

Required Professional Development Workshops

The required workshop series must be completed in the first semester of the program.

Workshops in the areas of Communications, Leadership skills, and Career planning are a requirement for all MBA and MSA students. Workshops are held during orientation and two Saturdays in September and October at the SF State Downtown Campus. A list of workshop topics and dates will be posted on our website and announced via email in late July.

Graduate Business Programs Email Distribution List

Once the semester begins, the College of Business automatically adds your SFSU email address to our email distribution list.

Starting in September, you will receive important emails from the Graduate Business Programs office at your SF State email address. You will also receive important deadlines and announcements from the University. Please check your SFSU email account or forward your messages to your personal email address so you do not miss any of these announcements.
