Graduate Students : MBA : Communications Workshops and Communications Advising

The key to business success is effective communications, the business skill required most in today's competitive world, ahead of both financial and business acumen!

Learn and practice effective presentation and communications skills through workshops facilitated by Knute Kallander.

 All workshops held at the SF State Downtown Campus and also open to all current graduate business students.

Graduation Requirement

The two required workshops are a graduation requirement for graduate business students and should be fulfilled within the first semester of study. All new incoming students must attend both sessions to fulfill this graduation requirement.

Required Communications Workshop I: Critical Communications Skills

In this training, we explore and practice skills vital to active listening. Once active listening is mastered, we then create more effective messages that can influence others and create a call to action.

You will learn both critical speaking and listening skills by practicing the following models in an experiential learning environment:

  • prevent misunderstanding and clarify
  • how to reflect
  • use of body language
  • tone
  • make sound agreements
  • interactive speaking
  • deliver your message
  • convey empathy so that others feel understood

Required Communications Workshop II: Powerful Presentations

Sat., Oct. 5, 2013, 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Delivering presentations in small and large groups can be a daunting task. Yet, in most companies, what separates executives from managers is the ability to create and deliver powerful presentations. In this workshop, we explore what goes into presentations—from design to delivery. We also discover powerful techniques to conquer anxiety along the way.

These skills are covered in an experiential learning environment:

  • content and presentation preparation
  • body language of presentations
  • creating ease and safety for audience
  • visual aids
  • delivering and receiving feedback
  • debriefing
  • facilitation

Facilitating Effective and Fun Meetings

Have you ever wondered why a meeting was called or whether you should even be there?

Did you wish you had your smart phone so you could get something productive done while others go on and on about items you are not involved with?

We can’t always bow out of meetings, but as a meeting leader we can have enormous influence on how meetings go. We have more control than we think over whether or not the meeting is timely, relevant, and has tangible next steps that individuals will act on and complete.

In this workshop, we’ll provide you with the tools to facilitate meetings in a manner that leads to outcomes you are excited about, and helps you in advance of any meeting to make it more purposeful and enjoyable for you and your classmates or colleagues.

Appointment hours for the fall semester are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Professional Development office is located in DTC 592.

Facilitator Knute Kallander

Knute Kallander

Knute Kallander has a master’s degree in organizational development and over 15 years of experience in building leadership capacities and teaching communication skills to top level managers and executives.

Knute has coached over 300 employees who were in a transition from being individual contributors to becoming department heads or team leaders. He has an extensive background in non-profit, financial services, and biotech including Providian Financial and Genentech.

He has designed programs to assess high potential employees (top 10 percent) and to help them with career development, 360-degree feedback, and team building. His experience leads to an engaging and dynamic classroom where real-life stories are used to illustrate principles in an experiential learning environment.
