Introduction to Big Data Discussions

Professor Paul Beckman, Chair, Department of Information Systems.

Doug Harr, Chief Information Officer of Splunk, will discuss his experience with Big Data since taking on the current role.  He will review a practical definition of big data for IT, what the market is for big data technology, and what the opportunity is for all IT practitioners if they embrace these projects and deliver results for IT and the business.  


Speaker Biography

Doug Harr is the chief information officer at Splunk. He is responsible for the deployment and management of technology at the company. Doug and his team serve Splunk’s information technology needs using private and public cloud solutions, while managing web functionality and global facilities. Doug oversees corporate analytics, an internal Splunk implementation to deliver web analytics, application management, security forensics and operational intelligence for the company at large.

Doug has been leading IT organizations for most of his career, at companies such as Ingres Corporation, Portal Software and Hewlett Packard. The rest of the time he has been in the IT consulting field, focused on delivering enterprise business applications to clients and technology companies like Symantec, VMware and Activision.

Doug holds a B.S. degree in business from Cal Poly, SLO. He is engaged in the CISE CIO consortium, lectures at several local universities and is a faculty member for the CIO Executive Development Program at San Francisco State University.
