SF State's Department of Information Systems invites all faculty and students to a discussion on Big Data, Friday, December 6, 3–5 pm, at the SF State Downtown Campus, room 557; light refreshments will be served. No RSVP is necessary.

  • Introduction to Big Data Discussions: Professor Paul Beckman, Chair, Department of Information Systems.
  • Michael Glass, Director, Demand Side Systems at PG&E and Victor Jimenez, Utilities Executive at Capgemini will review utility industry trends in data and analytics, and how recent developments are enabling utilities to provide new information and insights to customers, employees, and third parties.
  • The speakers will discuss PG&E’s ongoing journey beginning with the deployment of 9 million SmartMeters™.  There are tremendous opportunities resulting from the influx of data from grid modernization efforts coupled with new trends in analytics, business intelligence, and data warehousing.  The discussion will explore impacts to PG&E’s customer programs, as well as short and long term implications to grid operations and energy supply.
  • Finally, the speakers will discuss how these changes are transforming PG&E’s IT landscape.  Cross-functional opportunities abound, but are driving the need for new skills and better tools, governance, and collaboration.
  • Q&A: Facilitated by Professor Lutfus Sayeed, SFSU and Kaustav P. “KP” Chaudhuri, Founder, Lead Socially Inc.
