Description

The Business and International Education (BIE) Grant Program in the College of Business (COB) at San Francisco State University (SFSU) was designed to meet the needs and purposes of the authorizing statute of the United States Department of Education. The BIE Program consisted of three curriculum projects designed to enhance the international business education of our students, and two community outreach projects designed to improve the international trade capabilities of small and family-owned northern California wineries.

One academic project focused on the need to develop a digital collection of high quality, online teaching modules in the area of international business education. A second academic project entailed developing new academic curricula to enhance students' knowledge buyer behavior in the important South Asia and Asia Pacific trade regions. The third academic project involved the development of case studies focusing on the international trade challenges facing family-owned wineries competing in the global market place.

One community outreach project developed software applications and training materials for small wineries to connect them with appropriate specialty distributors to reach customers in the international marketplace. The training material was distributed to the wineries through the Internet, workshops and seminars. The second community outreach project developed a family-owned winery forum under the auspices of the Family Business Center in the COB. This project will develop training seminars and other resources geared explicitly to help northern California family-owned wineries learn how to better compete in the international marketplace. To support us in these outreach endeavors we were indeed fortunate to have the industry's oldest (since 1935) and most respected trade organization, the Wine Institute, as our official grant partner.
