U.S. students are required to obtain the Long-Stay French Visa.
This is a a 3-step process and each step is then further outlined below.
- Register with CampusFrance
- Appear in person at the local French Consulate
- Appear in person again to pick-up your passport one week later, or have it mailed to you
Register with CampusFrance
The Visa process begins with CAMPUS FRANCE. It is an online system that coordinates with French Consulates to streamline the Visa process.
Follow the four steps:
- You must create an account and fill-out an online profile to begin the Visa process: http://usa.campusfrance.org/
- Access the CampusFrance Application Guide to facilitate quick and easy account set-up: http://usa.campusfrance.org/IMG/pdf/english_version6.pdf
- Print two copies of the confirmation page and retain for your records. You will need a copy as part of the required documents section for the Visa.
- To complete the CampusFrance registration process, mail a money order for $70, (write your Campus ID # in the subject line of the money order) plus a copy of your acceptance letter* from the University of Nice to:
CampusFrance
Embassy of France
4101 Reservoir Rd. NW

Consulate Appointment
Once you have completed the CampusFrance registration process, schedule an appointment with your local Consulate three weeks after your registration date with CampusFrance. Be sure to bring all necessary documents to your appointment.
Required documents
Information taken from the San Francisco French Consulate as of July 1, 2010.
- Passport valid for three months beyond the applicant’s last day in France (include one photocopy). Your passport must have at least two blank visa pages remaining.
- One Long Stay application form legibly filled out and signed. Remember to indicate a date of departure.
- One passport-size photograph in color or black and white, 35x45 mm, clear background
- For non US citizens: include proof of legal residence in the U.S., e.g., visa, permanent resident card, (include one photocopy)
- A letter of admission* (pre-enrollment) from a University which the applicant will attend in France. This school must be recognized by the French Cultural Office (include one photocopy).
*Print the official student list from the UNice website for the MBA MIB program: http://www.mba-unice.eu/images/pdf/mbamib_admission_results_2010.pdf - Financial guarantee: A notarized statement (from the parents) certifying that the applicant will receive a monthly allowance of 800 US dollars for the duration of her/his stay in France AND their last three bank statements, or a proof of (student’s) personal income and their last three bank statements and a letter from the University stating that room, board and tuition are fully prepaid (include one photocopy)
- Proof of medical insurance with coverage valid for France if you are attending a school or university for a stay less than six months OR if you are 28 years or older regardless of the length of your studies (include one photocopy). You must prove that the coverage is valid while you study in France with a letter from your medical insurance.
- A printout of your ID number from Campus France. Campus France cannot activate your account until your profile is complete on their site (download and read the Guide to Campus France Registration PDF from their homepage) AND send them payment and a photocopy of your admission letter, at least 3 weeks before your visa appointment. Be sure to check your email for any correspondence from CampusFrance after your initial registration date, and bring that to the Visa appointment.
- Round trip ticket if you are studying six months or less (include one photocopy) or a one way ticket only if you are studying in France more than six months (include one photocopy)
- On the date of your appointment, submit your paperwork, and complete the OIE form. You will be asked to leave your passport with the Consulate in order for them to insert the physical Visa. Be prepared to have your fingerprint scanning (electronic) and pay $60 for the Visa (by credit card).
Pick up Your Passport
The Visa takes about one week to process, at which time you can then go back in person to pick it up if you’re local (once the Consulate has called to tell you it is ready), or you can have your passport mailed to you via FedEx. They will ask you to fill-out a FedEx envelope for yourself, and to pay delivery costs (approx. $15). You can also bring in your own pre-paid envelope for them to use to mail the passport back to you. It is recommended to use certified mail via UPS or FedEx so you can track delivery.
Make sure you double check the Visa requirements on the Consulate's webpage so that you have everything before you go as information may have changed.
